Cherry's dilemmas

TV presenter and blogger Cherry Healey encounters a mass of conflicting information when it comes to advice for parenting her young daughter, Coco.

In her quest to determine what type of mother she should be, she meets a range of parents with different approaches to raising their children. There's the strict, the laidback, the no-rules, the fearful, the bossy and many variations thereof. Cherry ponders which course she will steer and how she will stick to it:

If walls could talk

If walls could talk, what would they tell us about the past?  That's the idea behind the tv programme "If Walls Could Talk".   The programme is a racy exploration of how we’ve used the rooms in our houses over the centuries.

For an introduction to the programme, click here
For a fragment about the history of toilet paper, click here
For a fragment about Edwardian bathrooms, click here
For a fragment about the history of the kitchen, click here (homework fragment)

The series tells the story of British domestic life from the middle ages to the present day through four rooms (the kitchen, the bed room, the bathroom and the sitting room) and will explore the way that our attitudes and habits have changed in relation to family, privacy, cleanliness, class and technology.

The presenter is historian Lucy Worsley.  Have a look at her website here.

A-levels criticized

This article (The Guardian, Wednesday 16 February 2011) is critical of the system of A-levels in the UK.  It says that the current system of A-levels (which means that at the age of 16, students have to pick 3 or 4 subjects in which to specialize for two years) may be a good system to form specialists, but is not a good system to form good citizens.
